Vis-U-al Arts - Contemporary Visual Arts

Exhibition of work by local emerging and established artists

 27 28 29 April 2007

An exciting new visual arts exhibition on Shakespeare’s Birthday weekend this April, promises to celebrate the excellent and diverse talents of local and regional artists.  The exhibition, supported by Stratford Town Trust and the Civic Hall, is a unique opportunity for people to meet community art groups and established and emerging artists of all ages, and to see a wide range of contemporary visual arts on their doorstep.

Featuring the work of over a hundred artists – from painters to sculpture, ceramics to photography, fabric to jewellery – the exhibition will offer stimulating and thought-provoking art for all!

For those who wish to explore their creative sides, the event will offer a rare opportunity for both young people and adults of all abilities to join one of the taster workshops and demonstrations that will run throughout the weekend.

The use of recycled materials used creatively to make art works will feature big in this exhibition. On offer there will be the chance for visitors to try their hand at making fabric brooches or sculptures from recycled materials, or even willow work. Materials for workshops with local artist Ros Ingram will be sponsored by ‘Creates’ a recycling distribution point.

The Vis-U-al team are planning for local school children and students to submit work for the exhibition and they also plan to offer an art trail around the venue. Their main aim is to involve young people at a young age and inspire them to create and share their work regularly.

This initiative is an exciting opportunity to sample some of the best artwork Stratford has to offer, to meet the artists themselves and grill them about their work, their inspiration and plans and for artists of all abilities to showcase their work.

Local artists interested in exhibiting, there are spaces still available – but be quick!  Contact rachelwarren@mac.com or download an application above.

Mission for 2007

Civic Hall aims :

  • To build and support a programme of visual art projects and exhibitions, across a range of media, that challenge and comment on art forms and cultural subjects in our community. To offer access to visual art from local, regional, national and global sources either at the Civic Hall or online at ww.civichall.co.uk.
  • To be a meeting place for artists and audiences and to facilitate communication, participation and learning for artists, audiences and students of all ages

Exhibitions

  • Will happen in the box office space, the MarketSpace and other exhibition areas in the Civic Hall and surrounding external spaces. The work exhibited will encourage participation and communication between local groups, artists and students in Stratford upon Avon

Commissions

  • There will be a strand of specially commissioned work by established and emerging local artists of all ages running through the programme. These commissions will be inspired by, but not exclusively, local issues, family, our changing environment, global politics and culture and allow a response to international art initiatives, buildings and exhibitions. This is not meant to be prescriptive but offer a framework.

Residencies

  • The Civic Hall will work to establish the space and resources to offer a Civic Hall based residency to a local artist working in any visual art medium
Touring programme – we will invite touring exhibitions or contact artists based outside Stratford upon Avon to show in one of the spaces at least 4 times every year

Events

  • We aim to commission, inspire and curate  one-off events particularly on the work of local or regionally based artists and across artforms to take place in the Civic Hall and in other spaces in Stratford upon Avon

Partnerships

  • The Civic Hall will aim to build partnerships with local, regional and national organisations and encourage a sense of involvement and ownership of the art project and wider policy

Online

  • We will build and curate an online art space on the Civic Hall website. The website will also provide a forum for comments on exhibitions held at the Civic Hall or on the website. The online forum will be designed to encourage communication and allow the submission of ideas on, but not exclusive to: arts projects, commissions, exhibition theme and spaces.
