Taking Steps
by Alan Ayckbourn

Taking Steps by Alan Ayckbourn premiered in 1979 at The Stephen Joseph theatre-in-th-Round in Scarborough, directed by the author, to much acclaim.  It has recently been revived at the Orange Tree in Richmond, again directed by Ayckbourn himself.

Alan Ayckbourn said of the play that he wrote it as a humble tribute to Ben Travers, one of the great masters of theatrical farce.  It is set on three floors - set on the same playing level.

Bucket magnate Roland shares The Pines with his younger ex-dancer wife Elizabeth who is trying to leave him with the help of her hapless brother Mark, himself obsessed with his future ownership of a fishing shop.  Roland meantime is taking steps to buy the property and has arrange for the owner and his own solicitor to meet.  Instead, the nervous Tristram, a junior from the solicitors office, arrives.

Though a farce, the play also raises questions of whether we have the freedom to choose our own futures, or whether we are ensnared by our past and our possessions.

The band features ten fine musicians and a wealth of vocal talent, all of whom bring to the stage the fun and excitement of the period. The show is overflowing with toe – tapping hits from the golden age of the musicals, including the happy sounds of Fats Waller, Hoagy Carmichael, George Gershwin, Al Bowlly and Al Jolson. The great musical numbers include The Man I Love, Swanee, The Charleston, California Here I Come, Stardust, My Baby Just Cares For Me and many more.

The Charleston Chasers, who are led by percussionist / vocalist Debbie Arthurs, have been described as worthy ambassadors of the music. They have appeared at festivals and theatres around the UK  to much acclaim, and are regulars on BBC Radio.
